
The St. George’s Society Toronto and its Committee of Management (COM), are pleased to announce the appointment of Aarondeep (Aaron) S. Bains as the charity’s next President. The St. George’s Society Toronto is the oldest charity in Toronto and is one of the oldest charitable organizations in Canada. Bains is the first minority / BIPOC (black, Indigenous or person of colour) to lead the organization in its 186 year history. Bains brings to the position a wealth of knowledge and a range of diverse experiences.
Bains is a lawyer at the Bay Street law firm, Aird & Berlis LLP, where he practices domestic and international business law. He holds various board and senior executive roles in non-profit organizations across the City of Toronto, including the South Asian Bar Association of Toronto (President and Director), the Canadian International Council (Branch Director), and the Breakfast of Champions Charity for SickKids Hospital (Executive Committee Member). He has been a Member of the Committee of Management of The St. George’s Society of Toronto since 2018.
Bains obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) in International and European Business Law from the Université Jean Moulin (Lyon III) in 2014. He completed his Juris Doctor at Queen's University, as well as an International Business Law Certificate at the Bader International Study Center, Herstmonceux Castle. He obtained is Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia and an Honours Certificate in International Relations from the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris.
Bains was recently named as one of Canada’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in 2020 by Canadian Lawyer magazine in the Young Influencer category. He was also recognized as a 2020 Precedent Setter by Precedent Magazine, which recognizes six outstanding young Toronto lawyers who have shown excellence and leadership in their practice and their community.
Bains is honoured to be the Society’s new President and feels this is a tremendous opportunity to contribute to the historical charity and support those most in need in the City of Toronto. “My experiences will help me bring a fresh lens to the efforts of the St. George’s Society while maintaining a deep rooted respect for its history”.
Aaron is taking over from Robert Baines, who has served as president since 2018 and who will continue to be involved with the Society as Past Master on the Committee of Management. “The Committee of Management would like to thank Robert for his stellar leadership over the past few years. He has been an important steward for the organization and has guided its management and members through this particularly difficult year. We are fortunate that he will continue being part of the St. George’s Society” says Aaron.
Robert Baines, Past Master, says he and the rest of the Committee of Management are delighted to have Bains as the St George’s Society Toronto’s next President. “Aaron will continue to bring new ideas to the organization while maintaining prudent management and commitment to supporting the City’s most vulnerable citizens” says Robert.
